Press Releases – JULIA GORMAN ILLUMINATES MCA FACADE FOR VIVID SYDNEY 2017

Posted on March 14, 2017
Vivid Sydney have announced that Melbourne-based artist Julia Gorman will illuminate the heritage-listed façade of the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA), when the world’s largest festival of light, music and ideas returns from Friday 26 May to Saturday 17 June 2017.

Organic Vibrations is a collaboration between Julia Gorman, an Australian artist whose work is currently on display in the Collection Galleries of the MCA, and Paris-based collective, Danny Rose. Together, they will create a single, coherent artwork from the constant morphing of a series of images, flowing seamlessly over the Circular Quay façade.

Each year, the installation for the façade is developed specifically for Vivid Sydney in collaboration with the MCA. For this year’s installation inspiration is drawn from shapes and colours in the natural world. Sinuous lines will appear to grow organically across the building until they cover the geometric art deco facade of the Museum.

The installation will use projection-mapping techniques with images originally made Gorman in watercolour, oils, marker pen, and a painting application. The flow of handmade images, will be synthesised with music, to creates a multi-sensory experience as the audience enjoys a 10-minute animated sequence of colour, movement and emotion.

Museum of Contemporary Art Australia Director, Elizabeth Ann Macgregor OBE, said, ‘We are delighted to continue working with Julia Gorman. In 2016, she reinvigorated the Museum’s former Maritime Services Boardroom with a colourful installation entitled ‘Inside/Out’.’

‘It’s a great time to visit the MCA during Vivid Sydney. We are one of the city’s best locations to encounter spectacular views of a colour-drenched Sydney Harbour. We welcome visitors to enjoy the façade and the world-class exhibitions, programs and dining inside,’ Macgregor added.

Throughout the festival the MCA will extend opening hours on Wednesday to Sunday from 10am until 9pm, maintaining regular hours on Monday and Tuesday from
10am until 5pm.

Here are some of the ways visitors can enjoy what’s on offer:
