Have you ever wanted to break the social convention of silence in a museum with loud percussion? Have you ever felt like just shouting around a gallery?

If this is indeed an impulsion you’ve had, luckily for you, sound art group” Super Critical Mass are creating a new performance work for massed voices right here at MCA HQ. And they’d like you to be part of it. This will be part of a larger series of performance works brought to the MCA by Performance Space under the banner of #SonicSocial2014.

Super Critical Mass will take over the main spaces of the Museum for two days – Sat 14 and Sun 15 of Jun – using simple vocal techniques to create an interconnected abstract 'mass’. It will be fun, instructive and physically engaging – a sort of sonic flash mob!

The work will evolve through a series of workshops exploring simple vocal techniques and group exercises. You don’t need any prior training – your innate skills are desired! Food and drink will be on hand.

Working across composing, writing and broadcasting, Julian Day is a Sydney-based artist whose practice combines these diverse elements to produce installations and sound pieces which are frequently collaborative and site-specific, and have taken place in New York, the UK, Europe and Australia. Luke Jaaniste is a Brisbane-based sonic and visual artist, communal facilitator and emerging philosopher. Jaaniste works with a range of ongoing sound-based practices, each exploring the vibrational, visceral and spatial qualities of sound along with immersive whole-body listening, within 'expanded music’.

Super Critical Mass is an ongoing project by Julian Day, Luke Jaaniste. Super Critical Mass performances are situations for social interplay through shared homogeneous sound that articulate architectures and social situations through simple tasks and actions. Using the components of voice, percussion and masses of one type of instrument, Day and Jaaniste explore the aural and spatial qualities of spaces as diverse as car parks, libraries, cathedrals, shopfronts, canals, laneways and galleries. They work with crowd dynamics to engender both consensus and dissent, to create temporary, participatory, experiences that are explorations of societies, sound and the ‘relational properties of spaces’ .

For Sonic Social Jaaniste and Day are producing a work which responds to the MCA Collection and galleries. Visitors to the MCA may encounter both the physical installation of performers in the galleries and the compositions they enact. Super Critical Mass plays on notions of reaching a critical mass with sound and performers – a moment when the collective voices merge, and incorporate the hymnal elements of celebrating mass, which combine to create a transformative effect.
