About Matthys Gerber
Sydney artist Matthys Gerber was born in 1956 in Delft, Holland and immigrated to Australia in 1971. Primarily self-taught and with a career spanning more than three decades, he has exhibited widely both in Australia and internationally. His work is included in most major Australian public collections as well as a number of corporate and private collections nationally and abroad.
Working primarily with painting and photography, Gerber’s conceptual painting practice employs a range of contradictory techniques executed with expert skill that tend to hover uncomfortably between abstraction and representation. His work continually defies convention, embracing ambiguity and exploring intersections between high and low art.
Matthys Gerber is currently a Senior Lecturer of Painting at the Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney and is represented by Sarah Cottier Gallery in Sydney.
