Artist Run Initiatives: Relevance of difference
– Presented by SafARI

Artist-run initiatives have become realised as an important factor in urban regeneration, but what is the role of an ARI? And what are the differences that make these inititaives so unique and important to Sydney’s cultural life?

Representatives of four very different ARIs will come together to discuss their experiences leading creative spaces and events in Sydney. Each ARI represented on the panel responds to the ever changing face of contemporary art practice, leaning towards non-traditional modes of exhibiting and presenting ideas – across platforms and across mediums.

Speakers include:

Kate Blackmore from Serial Space
Serial Space is a curatorial collective, a space and a community. The artforms that Serial Space support are (but not limited to) sound art, experimental music, electronic art, new media art, and performance art.

Nick Garner from Das Platforms
Das Platforms is an Australian-based media project presenting, documenting and promoting new conversations in the emerging and contemporary arts. Developing content for print and online distribution, as interviews, pictorials, critical articles, artists’ videos and documentaries, Das Platforms presents a cross-section of the most interesting and important art to a national audience.

Nina Stromqvist & Danielle Robson co-Curators of SafARI 2012
SafARI is the 'unofficial’ fringe event to the Biennale of Sydney (BoS), SafARI aims to generate an increased awareness of emerging and unrepresented artists. It also aims to highlight the whereabouts of ARIs and provides a forum for discussion, discovery and professional development for all involved.

Dara Gill from First Draft Gallery
Firstdraft is a national Artist-Run-Initiative (ARI) that supports the development of emerging and experimental artistic practice through diverse and innovative programs. Firstdraft champions emerging and experimental arts by supporting innovative artists, curators and writers through four interconnected areas; exhibition, creative and professional development, community engagement and sustainability.
