ARTBAR takes your gallery experience and flips it on its head with an artist driven evening of art, music and performance. Kicking off on the last Friday of every month, this adults only event transforms all levels of the MCA.
It’s art, but not as you know it.
To kick off the first ARTBAR of 2018, artist Kate Beynon is here with a bang!
A celebration, exploration and contemplation of “mixture”, from other worlds; mixed cultural identity; transformations; supernatural; shapeshifting; hybridity; in-between states and spaces; fluidity; storytelling; and the fantastical.
Expect video works, dance classes, panel discussions, rooftop DJ’s and so much more!

About Kate Beynon
Kate Beynon was born in Kowloon, aka ‘The City of Nine Dragons’ in Hong Kong, and arrived in Australia from the UK in 1974. Shaped by story-telling and informed by an interest in mixed cultural identity and feminism, Beynon’s work draws on a diverse range of traditional and contemporary influences — from her maternal grandfather’s scroll paintings and calligraphy, to textiles, film, comic books and fashion. She has held over 25 solo exhibitions with recent significant projects including Other Worlds: Creatures of the In-between, Glen Eira City Council Gallery, Melbourne (2017); Kate Beynon: Friendly Beasts, Children’s Art Centre, QAGOMA (2017) and An-Li: A Chinese Ghost Tale, TarraWarra Museum of Art (2015), accompanied by a book of the same title commissioned by Art and Australia/ARTAND Foundation.
