About the exhibition

Photo Works from the MCA Collection featured 30 works by Australian and international artists from the 1970s to the 1990s. Selected to complement the MCA’s summer exhibitions, Other Pictures: Anonymous Photographs from the Thomas Walther Collection and Peter Robertson: Sharpies (both exhibitions of vernacular photographs), Photo Works aimed to highlight the versatility of the photographic object, and its relationship to other media, particularly painting.

In these works, the photograph formed the basis for explorations into a range of formal and conceptual concerns. A number of works referenced art history and architecture, with many drawing on Minimalism and abstraction. Photographic images were scanned onto canvas, placed in sculptural light boxes, drawn and painted over, or printed large and hung unframed, defying simple categorisation.
