Robert Rooney

Born 1937 Melbourne, Victoria. Lived and worked Melbourne. Died 2017, Melbourne.


Robert Rooney was a Melbourne-based art critic, painter and photographer and a key proponent of conceptual art in Australia. Rooney’s work featured in the seminal exhibition The Field at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne and Art Gallery of New South Wales in 1968. Subsequent exhibitions have included Robert Rooney, the Box Brownie Years 1956–58, Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne (2013); Play, National Gallery of Australia, Canberra (2012); Endless Present: Robert Rooney and Conceptual Art, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (2010); Cubism and Australian Art, Heide Museum of Modern Art, Melbourne, (2009); 1968, National Gallery of Australia, Canberra (1995); and The Readymade Boomerang: Certain Relations in 20th Century Art, 8th Biennale of Sydney (1990).

Rooney’s work is held in a number of state, regional and university collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide; Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth; and Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane.
