Mike Parr

Born 1945, Sydney, New South Wales. Lives and works Sydney.


Mike Parr’s broad-ranging practice in performance, printmaking and drawing goes back to the early 1970s. His work, often highly political, has been exhibited extensively around Australia and the rest of the world, including in major group exhibitions such as Mix Tape 1980s: Appropriation, Subculture, Critical Style, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (2013); Last Ride in a Hot Air Balloon, 4th Auckland Triennial, Auckland (2010); 3rd Moscow Biennale, Moscow (2009); Revolutions – Forms That Turn, 16th Biennale of Sydney (2008) and Into Me/Out of Me, PS1, Museum of Modern Art, New York (2006).

Parr’s work has been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including major survey shows such as Brain Coral, National Art School Gallery, Sydney (2012); Mike Parr Edelweiss, Kunsthalle Wein, Vienna (2012); and Volte Face: Mike Parr Prints & Preprints 1970–2005, MCA, Sydney (2006).

Parr’s work is held in the collection of numerous public institutions and universities throughout Australia, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane; Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide; Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth; National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; and National Library of Australia, Canberra.
