Join this month’s curator Claudia Nicholson in a night that will turn the MCA into an elaborate quinceañera party full of love, devotion and gift-giving. Tug at your loved ones’ heartstrings by creating your own gift of art, or hit the card-making station and craft a token of your devotion.
The night will treat you to captivating artworks (one was even stolen by the artist herself) and performances ranging from a Selena medley by Koco Carey to Google Translate karaoke with Rainbow Chan. Delve into the rituals and traditions that make up Claudia’s practice and enjoy an evening that’s all about sharing and showing love.
We caught up with the curator, Claudia Nicholson to find out more.
I’m really excited to curate ARTBAR. It’s such a great opportunity to share with everyone the work of local artists who I love.
I see my work as sitting between both cultures and, at times, exploring my position between them. I don’t think I can separate them from one another and I wouldn’t really want to. My work is about connecting to a culture through contemporary practice.
I hope people have the chance to see work that artists have made as gifts rather than for exhibition. These works are usually private but are charged with intimacy or humor, which I think, makes them really special. So I hope people feel excited after seeing these works.
A quinceañera is a 15th birthday party thrown for young women in Latin America. They are extravagent and lush celebrations. I have never been to one or had one so I am hoping to bring a bit of this to ARTBAR.
Drive me to Bunnings and stay up all night with me cutting up tiny flowers then making me toast while I nap before driving me back to the gallery for the exhibition opening. That’s devotion.
I Miss You by Aaliyah. So everyone can have a slow dance.
