Blog – ARTBAR and Vivid meet again

Posted on May 20, 2016 by Bella Szukilojc

Dipped in colour and drenched in light, we hand the paintbrush over to Huseyin Sami to curate this month’s MCA ARTBAR as it collides with Vivid Sydney. Let’s all take a moment to get to know the Western Sydney artist who is also tasked to illuminate the heritage-listed façade of the MCA when the world’s largest festival of light, music and ideas returns to town this month.

First off, congratulations! ARTBAR and Vivid Sydney all in one month is no small feat! We can’t wait to see The Matter of Painting projected onto the façade of the Museum. What has it been like to work on such a unique project with French projection wizards Danny Rose?

Thank you, yes it should be a great event and I’m looking forward to seeing it projected myself.

It’s definitely been a great experience working with these guys, they are definitely a collective that understand and respect the creative journey of translating an artists practice into this format.

This month we celebrate ARTBAR turning 4; which kind of means you are hosting our birthday party… any well wishes?

I didn’t know it’s was ARTBAR’s birthday! Happy Birthday! Its such a great event that the MCA hosts, its been fun to be a part of it on this particular occasion.

As an artist what attracted you to the ARTBAR concept?

I suppose it’s an opportunity to curate a program of artists and works that I like in a temporal format, which is quite unique. And in some instances to try something new. To put on such a program for just one night is challenging, I wanted to make sure that there was a nice correlation between the works and the spaces.

Working predominately within the medium, what are your thoughts of painting’s presence within contemporary art today?

Painting for me has always represented a strong presence in the art world both locally and internationally. Paintings importance is continuously highlighted by the number of artists still engaging with the medium. As long as artists want to paint it will always provide a value contribution to the contemporary art world.

The Vivid edition of ARTBAR is one of the MCA’s most anticipated events of the year, and a super-hot ticket. What artists have you included on the line-up and what should guests be excited about?

I’ve selected a great list of artists to get involved this month.

We have Koji Ryui, Lara Merrett, Brendan Van Hek, John Nicholson, Consuelo Cavaniglia, Dan Hollier and Declan Rooney. There will be a variety of works and an opportunity to see how these artists each engage with idea of material and processes. There will be a photocopy printer in one of the spaces for whoever wants to print off a black and white work from one of the participating artists, an immersive balloon installation, colour fields works that will occupy the walls and floors and a few other great works.

I’m looking forward to seeing how all these works interconnect in the space and play off each other.
