How can young people support the Arts without breaking the bank and what’s in it for them? Emilya Colliver – Founder & Director of Art Pharmacy waxes lyrical on how we can do our bit and have fun doing it!

There is no doubt that young Australians feel lucky to be living in this amazing country. As expensive as it is to live here (in the top 5 most expensive in the world in fact), young Australians do want to be seen as caring lovers of humanity. Hard not to be with weather like this! But, when it comes to putting their money where their mouth is, how do they know where to go or who to support? What benefits both them personally, by exercising their values in giving and volunteering, and the beneficiaries?

Being an art lover, the MCA Young Ambassador Program was the perfect fit for me. I’ve been a Young Ambassador since the beginning (is that already 4 years?), meaning I’ve been lucky to attend priceless events, like meeting Tracey Emin at Amanda Love’s house; being invited to see the private collections of Lisa Paulsen and Gene Sherman; seeing Hayden Fowlers studio complete with live chickens; and privately guided tours through the Sydney Bienniale among a multitude of other world renowned exhibitions at the MCA and beyond. These special experiences wouldn’t have been possible without the giving nature of the artists, owners, collectors and organisers.

I’ve been passionate about art for as long as I can remember, and this passion was cemented during my decade in London studying and working for some of the most famous art institutions in the world. When you work with these institutions you realise how much support is required to realise the exhibitions and programs we all enjoy mostly for FREE. What I love about the Young Ambassador program is it brings it all back down to earth but still makes everything accessible.

MCA Social Event

MCA Social: bringing together art, philanthropy and merrymaking on Sat Jul 26

MCA Social, presented by the Young Ambassadors, is a wonderful opportunity to marry my interest in supporting the arts with a really fun event.
All funds raised by the event are in support of Primavera, the MCA’s annual exhibition of young Australian artists. It provides a fantastic chance for young arts supporters, young artists and fun loving Sydney-siders to have a great night out, all in the name of art.

At Art Pharmacy I am actively trying to encourage more people to collect Australian art, and I’m trying to do this without the pretension or expense that most people consider normal for art galleries. Art Pharmacy offers emerging artists the spring-board to get their work out there, but also gives people a way to support these artists in ways that they would never normally be able to. I’ve been amazed at the age and demographic range of buyers I have dealt with. It’s encouraging to see how many people believe in, and want to be a part of, a philanthropic movement.
