Blog – MCA Insight: Wangechi Mutu

Posted on June 6, 2013 by Tristan Deratz View Comments

Wangechi Mutu’s exhibition at the MCA is raw yet finely crafted; visceral yet contemplative.

MCA Insight, our free smartphone app, furthers that experience by giving you extended texts about selected works in the Mutu exhibition, and adds the artist’s own voice to your experience of her work.

Mutu spoke candidly to MCA curator Rachel Kent about a range of issues that are inflected through her work, from the representation of black women’s bodies in pornography to her personal experience of the Rwandan genocide.

The recording of that discussion has been spliced into extracts that can be listened to through MCA Insight. A location awareness app, MCA Insight uses indoor wifi to locate you in the MCA gallery spaces and offer you information about the artworks immediately around you. So, as you wander through the exhibition space, you can hear Wangechi Mutu illuminate the works directly in front of you.

In this extract, included with the app information about her work Amazing Grace (2010), Mutu describes how her performative actions in video works allow her to embody the gestures of, and share an affinity with, women whom she admires:
