Blog – Connecting with Korea

Posted on March 13, 2013 by Melinda Garcia in Creative Learning.

February 26th was quite a milestone for the MCA Digital Learning team as it marked our first Digital Excursion with an international school. Using the Museum’s video conferencing capabilities, we connected with an energetic group of year 10 and 11 students drawn together for a gifted and talented program in Seoul, Korea.

The session began with a showcase of the Museum and its location in The Rocks, followed by a (slide show) of some of the great artworks in the MCA Collection, which doubled as a quick introduction to Australian Contemporary Art for the Korean students.

A highlight was a segment around Helen Eager’s giant wall work Tango, and our infamous Eager inspired ‘triangle tango’. This got the class moving and jumping around, which they resisted at first but then more than made up for it later!

The connection with Korea definitely showed off the possibilities of the National Broadband Network (NBN) in Australia. As Korea has already rolled out an equivalent to the NBN, our connection with them was crystal clear with next to no latency (delay). It’s exciting to imagine the experiences we can share with Australian schools once they’re on the NBN map. Watch this space for updates on future experiments!
