National Sorry Day Reading

The MCA is proud to be an official venue of the 2009 Sydney Writers’ Festival. Details of the festival program will be published in the Sydney Morning Herald and online at www.swf.org.au.

An afternoon of poetry and spoken word referencing National Sorry Day and the exhibition avoiding myth and message. Hosted and curated in collaboration with Anita Heiss, one of Australia’s most prolific and well-known Indigenous authors. Guest speakers are Romaine Moreton, Lorraine McGee-Sippel and Sharnee Fenwick.

Dr Anita Heiss is a member of the Wiradjuri nation of central New South Wales and is one of Australia’s most prolific and well-known authors of Indigenous literature.

Her published works include the historical novel Who Am I? The Diary of Mary Talence>, Sydney 1937, the poetry collection I’m not racist, but… non-fiction text Dhuuluu-Yala (To Talk Straight) – Publishing Aboriginal Literature, and two chicklit novels Not Meeting Mr Right and Avoiding Mr Right.

Dr Romaine Moreton is a Post Doctoral Research Fellow at Umulliko Indigenous Higher Education Research Centre, University of Newcastle. Romaine is a writer of poetry, prose and film, graduating with a PhD in philosophy from the University of Western Sydney in 2007. Romaine’s second poetry anthology titled Post Me to the Prime Minister, was published by IAD Press in 2004.

Lorraine McGee-Sippel is a descendant of the Yorta Yorta people from the Murray-Goulburn region on the Victorian-NSW border.

Lorraine began writing in the 1990's and her work has appeared in numerous anthologies and publications. In 2001 her autobiography The Best Part was short listed for an Emerging Writer with an unpublished manuscript at Varuna Writing House, Katoomba. In the same year she was successful in winning one of the first Indigenous Mentorships with ASA. She was short listed for the David Unaipon Award, part of the Queensland Premier's Literary Awards, in 2006 for Hey Mum What's a Half-Caste? and again in 2007 for Toots.

Sharnee Fenwick has been singing and performing on various stages from the early age of eight years old.

Sharnee discovered in 2001 a passion and a true love for country music. She graduated from the prestigious Tamworth Camerata Music College for under eighteens in both 2004 and 2005. Being a part of Tamworth Camerata, Sharnee had the pleasure of playing with Australia’s leading swing band The Feral Swing Katz.

During Tamworth Country Music Festival (2006), Sharnee released her debut EP, produced by Glen Hannah.
