MCA Collection: New Acquisitions

28 July 2009 - 31 January 2010

Every year MCA curators seek out works by Australian contemporary artists to acquire for the museum’s permanent collection. In this way, the MCA plays a vital role in supporting Australian artists. A key strand of MCA collecting is to support artists early in their careers and ensure their work is accessible for future generations.

New Acquisitions 2009 presents the selections of the MCA curatorial team which have been acquired over the past twelve months. It includes benjamin Armstrong’s surreal glass and wax sculptures, satirical multiples by Aleks Danko, and a sculptural diorama by Danie Mellor.

Building on the MCA’s existing collection of light works are Newell Harry’s assemblage featuring paper, votive objects and fairy lights, and Nicholas Folland’s uncanny installation of five ornate glass chandeliers, which lie flickering and upturned on the gallery floor.

New Acquisitions 2009 includes Benjamin Armstrong, Aleks Danko, Nicholas Folland, Christopher Hanrahan, Newell Harry, David Lawrey & Jaki Middleton, Moya McKenna, Danie Mellor, Nigel Milsom, Gemma Smith and Grant Stevens.
